Jamie Fraser’s (played by Sam Heughan) ghost has caused much discussion amongst Outlander fans since the Starz series began with many speculating about his importance and why he was watching Claire (Caitriona Balfe) before they had met. Now one fan thinks there’s a very simple explanation for Jamie’s ghost appearing in the 20th Century.
Claire was on honeymoon in Inverness with her husband Frank Randall (Tobias Menzies) after the end of the Second World War.
While Frank explored nearby castles and battlefields, Claire was fascinated by the local flowers and their healing abilities.
But she was mesmerised when she and Frank watched a group of locals dancing at Craigh Na Dun one evening and she returned later in the first episode.
However, this time, she got closer to the stones and heard a buzzing noise. When she touched the stones, she was transported back to 18th Century Scotland and met Jamie for the first time.

Claire had to quickly adjust to life in the 18th Century and to save herself, she had to marry Jamie to become a Scot.
Eventually, Claire and Jamie fell for one another and fans have watched their love story span decades.
Now the couple are living on Fraser’s Ridge in North Carolina as they grow old together watching their daughter Brianna (Sophie Skelton) and her husband Roger MacKenzie (Richard Rankin) raise their son Jemmy.
But fans know in the 20th Century, when Jamie’s ghost was watching Claire, the highlander was only 25-years-old.
This detail has left many confused but one fan thinks there is a simple explanation for the age of Jamie’s ghost and how he was able to see Claire before viewers saw them meet.
They explained: “As for Jamie’s ghost, I think it is Jamie’s spirit once free from Purgatory.
“Remember in DiA [Dragonfly in Amber] in that beautiful monologue about God giving him a rare woman, he said it would be worth enduring 200 years in Purgatory.”
The fans continued: “I don’t think that 200 years was randomly included.”

If Jamie dies in coming seasons, could it be revealed that he reverts back to the age he first met Claire in purgatory as he waits for Claire?
Perhaps Jamie has to wait 200 years after his death before Claire would die in her own time and they could be reunited.
There could be another explanation however, as one fan pointed out the night Jamie’s ghost appeared was a special one.
Redditor tay_berry9318 explained: “I have read over and over again about what people think about this , but I feel it’s very simple!

“When Frank and Claire check into the inn Mrs. Baird said during Samhain it’s the one night that ghosts can roam free. So there it is!
“Even still he died in the 18th century. He knew her before she knew him because she went back to the past. So, on the night where ghosts can roam he just wanted to see her.
“She hadn’t been in Scotland (that we know of) before then so the day before she goes through the stones is the only time he got to see her in 200 years.
“Also it’s just a little bit of foreshadowing for dramatic affect, if nothing else.”
Outlander seasons 1-5 are available to stream on Amazon Prime Video now.
