MAFS UK’s Gemma says she was left feeling suicidal and accuses producers of ‘manipulating storylines’

Married at First Sight UK contestant Gemma Rose has confessed she was left feeling suicidal after her time on the show, as she accused E4 of “slut shaming” and “ignoring her concerns” about her husband Matt Murray.

In a tell all interview with The Daily Mail, Gemma told the publication she had suffered from “multiple panic attacks” during her time on the popular dating show, and even alleges that she was “coerced” by producers into continuing with the experiment after she shared her desire to go home.

While taking part in the experiment, Gemma revealed that Matt’s behaviour had left her feeling “scared” and “vulnerable” as she accused her husband of even going so far as to “lie” about her “masturbating in a restaurant” as he tried to "cover up" his own behaviour.

The 31 year old mum of two hit back at E4 after she criticised them for airing the "false" storyline that she had pleasured herself in public, insisting that the claims made her want to “die”, and even prompted her to make a formal complaint to the broadcaster themselves.

While taking part in the experiment, Gemma alleged that Matt’s behaviour had left her feeling “scared” and “vulnerable”. As She accused her husband of even going so far as to “lie” about her “masturbating in a restaurant” as he tried to "cover up" his own behaviour.

Matt first made the startling accusation during one of the programme's commitment ceremonies, sparking Gemma to reply: "That's not true, I have to stick up for myself, Matt, because I don't stick up for myself enough.

"There's all these things that have happened that I haven't even spoken to you about because I don't feel that I can because you storm off. I am trying to understand.. I am trying to think what I do to trigger you to storm off."

“I feel that Matt slut shamed me, I feel like the experts did also,” said Gemma, as she explained how she felt the show had portrayed her as falsely promiscuous.

She also confessed to having felt physically “vulnerable” and “intimidated” on multiple occasions as Matt behaved “aggressively.”

After revealing she had flagged his behaviour to the production team, Gemma also alleges her concerns weren’t taken seriously.

She said: “There were a few occasions where I expressed that I didn't feel safe in the experiment, and I don't feel like that was heard.

“There was one incident in particular where I explained to Matt that I found his body language aggressive.”

“I told them I didn't feel safe, and I should have been removed a few times in that instance.”

The experience was compounded further for Gemma as her husband Matt decided to leave her in favour of pursuing a romance with fellow contestant Whitney instead, in a situation she described as the “worst experience of my life.”

Hitting out at the way she was portrayed on screen during the split, Gemma also went on to claim that she had suffered a string of panic attacks and suicidal thoughts in the wake of her time on the show, as she tearfully asked when “will someone's mental health come before making a TV show?”

In response to the claims, a Channel 4 Spokesperson said: "Married at First Sight UK episodes are carefully put together and we ensure that what we broadcast is a fair and accurate reflection of the events that unfolded. "

“Contributor care and safety is of paramount importance and we work closely with our production partners to ensure robust contributor care protocols are in place and that appropriate support is available to contributors before, during and after broadcast, including access to our experts and an independent psychologist.”
