Love Island star tackles body shaming

ITV2 viewers will soon be reunited with Love Island host Maya Jama and meet this summer’s contestants when the dating series hits screens next week.

Among the islanders looking for love in a Majorcan villa is 24-year-old beautician Ruchee Gurung.

Ruchee, who lives in Sutton, opened up to Express.co.uk about her hopes for the series ahead of its highly-anticipated launch.

She wasn’t shy about revealing what her mother warned her about getting intimate with boys on the show.

Ruchee explained: “My friends were really excited because they have always watched the show and they thought it was so crazy.

“My family is really supportive – I think my mum didn’t really understand it at first because she hadn’t watched the show.

“But I came home one day and she said, ‘Oh, I’ve watched a few videos on YouTube.’

“She was like, ‘There is a lot of tongue kissing and stuff like that.’

“I said I’m going to have to [kiss boys] but I’m not going to do it with anyone I don’t like.

“She said, ‘Just do what you have to do, but don’t have sex on TV!'”

Ruchee assured her mum getting intimate on the ITV2 programme “was not an option” before she jetted out to Majorca.

The star said she thinks her mum is now happy about her entering the villa as she’s “a grown woman”.

Ruchee revealed her mum told her: “I know you’re going to make the right decisions.”

For those unfamiliar with the show’s format, islanders have to do their best to flirt, date and couple up in a bid to avoid being dumped from the island.

The winning couple gets a £50,000 cash prize, with many trying to make their relationship work in the real world.

Since its inception, Love Island has had more than 161 million programme streams on ITVX to date.

Love Island returns on Monday, June 5 at 9pm on ITV2 and ITVX.
