Despite the six-part adaptation taking place in Paris, the star-studded cast and crew filmed far afield to recreate its picturesque settings. Get the lowdown…

Belgium

Despite being set in the French capital, it is, in fact, the Belgium capital of Brussels that fans will be seeing the idyllic locations from.

Some of the drama's most memorable scenes were filmed around the Béguinage Church while a flower market was created outside the church on the Place du Béguinage.

Other locations in Belgium included the Solvay Castle in La Hulpe, just outside the capital – while the Battle of Waterloo scenes were filmed in the province of Ecaussinnes.

Limburg in The Netherlands was also used as a filming location.

France

The small town of Sedan in Northern France, near the Belgium border, provided the show with its rock quarry.

Les Misérables director Shankland explained that he wanted to provide plenty of “colour” instead of focusing on the grey and bleak themes that run throughout the story.

Shankland said: “It felt to me there was such a lot of joy in the story,

“Of course there’s tremendous tragedy, tremendous social injustice in the story, but at its centre is a beautifully hopeful story about people trying to find their way.

What is Les Misérables about?

The BBC production, like the Oscar-winning film and West End hit musical, is based on the novel of the same name by Victor Hugo.

The novel focuses on the lives of several residents in Paris, and provides a social commentary on their lives in Post-Napoleonic France.

It follows the inter-mingling timelines of Fantine, Cosette, Marius, Jean Valjean, and a number of other residents.

The show premiered to mixed reviews with some fans baffled by Dominic West’s northern accent as Jean Valjean while others have bemoaned the lack of songs.
