Kerry Ingram: When I Died on Game of Thrones

In honor of the eighth and final season of Game of Thrones, IGN is taking a look back at some of the iconic characters who’ve fallen along the way, and the lasting impact they had on the story. These heroes and villains may not have made it to the end of the road, but their lives weren’t in vain – they stand as a fitting reminder that when you play the game of thrones, you win, or you die.
Shireen Baratheon was one of the true innocents on Game of Thrones, which is why her death stands as one of the most memorable — and horrifying — in the show’s history. She was a sweet little girl with no guile or malice, and with her death, Game of Thrones proved to us that not even the most innocent characters are safe.
It also underlined the depths to which people will sink to try to get power, and for Melisandre and Stannis Baratheon, the act of killing Shireen and the subsequent failure of their cause proved that the Lord of Light did not reward such a terrible act of filicide. Below, Kerry Ingram takes us inside that harrowing death scene in Part 6 of our retrospective series, “When I Died on Game of Thrones.”
What do you remember about filming your death scene?
The first day was kind of the lead-up to it. So all the walking down in the snow and stuff like that. And then the second day was the closeups of Shireen and all of the others, and it was all the fire stuff. Then I’m not sure what they did on the third day because I wasn’t there. But yeah, it was really fun. And it was weird because all the extras were watching me. There were like 200 extras. And I was this child given this responsibility of such a huge scene in the show and it was really nerve-wracking and exciting and all those things combined. I had to tell all my friends I was sick because I couldn’t tell them why I lost my voice.
When people approach you about Game of Thrones, what do they want to talk about?
They tend to say “your death was the saddest thing I’ve ever watched.” They tend to say “your character was the nicest in the whole show.” And most of them just scream, “Noooo,” in my face about me dying. Mostly what they want to talk about is how it was to film the death scene… and about the makeup as well.
Who do you think will end up on the Iron Throne?
I want Tyrion to be on the throne, however I think Cersei’s going to carry on ruling, unfortunately. Because she’s not nicest person, but she has got a leading head on her. But yeah, she’s playing the game and I think in the world of Game of Thrones, that’s what’s going to get you through. Kindness is not going to help you out in that world. And I think that’s why as much as I would love Tyrion to be on the throne, I think Cersei is going to stay.
