Kate Garraway left gobsmacked by Omid Djalili’s ‘feral’ teen confession
Omid Djalili reveals he stole his dad’s car at 15
On Wednesday night, Kate Garraway sat down with Iranian-British actor, comedian and writer Omid Djalili as he delved into his home life and incredible career.
During their chat on ITV’s Life Stories, fans learnt how Omid’s family took in sick Iranian lodgers, which meant there were many strangers constantly in and out of the home.
Admitting he didn’t like friends coming around the house, the comedian spent a lot of time outside.
He said: “The door was always open, so I never really had a bedroom, I never had privacy, I was pretty feral.
“I’d just go out just to get away from the house. I would be out, I used to nick my dad’s car when I was 15.

“I’d drive around London until 3 or 4 in the morning. One night I drove down to Dover and I got back, I’d got stuck in traffic.”
Kate was gobsmacked after hearing what Omid had done as a teen, as she interrupted him.
She shouted: “You drove to Dover?!

“Look, I was also a kid in the 70s by the way, my parents would’ve noticed If I had driven to Dover in a car.”
As the live audience laughed at Kate’s disbelief, Omid confessed when he eventually got home there were police there waiting as his dad thought the car had been stolen.
The comedian added: “He (his dad) said, ‘I just thought the car was nicked, so if you’re going to knick the car, just put it back’.
“He was remarkably liberal like that, he’s like me, he just accepted it.”
Although Omid confessed to not liking his friends in the house, he admitted it helped with his comedic side as the strangers would tell stories in a funny way.
He said: “I remember my mother, she said, ‘Jokes are very important, if people laugh they get better quickly and if they get better quickly we have a bigger turnaround of people come in’”.
Omid told Kate his parents looked after sick people who were genuinely in need of something.
Kate Garraway’s Life Stories is available to watch on ITVX.
