Jodie Whittaker Will Return for ‘Doctor Who’ Season 12

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Jodie Whittaker, currently embodying the 13^th iteration of iconic sci-fi hero Doctor Who (and the very first woman Doctor in the show’s 55-year history), will return for the long-running series’ upcoming 12^th season. As noted in the report, the BBC has yet to confirm her return and she could have just as easily gone away after one season, just as the very underrated Christopher Eccleston did when the show returned in 2005. Happily, she’ll be back.
“I really can’t wait to step back in and get to work again,” Whittaker told the outlet. “It’s such an incredible role. It’s been an extraordinary journey so far and I’m not quite ready to hand it over yet.”
The current season of “Doctor Who” ends this Sunday but of course, in the tradition of the series, will return with a special holiday episode on New Year’s Day. (The holiday episodes are oftentimes the best.) It ends a season that was a huge hit both with audiences and critics, who often cited Whittaker’s performance as breathing new life into the show. Thankfully, she’ll be piloting the TARDIS for at least another year (production is believed to begin in early 2019).
