Jeff Bezos and Ex MacKenzie 'Grew Apart Without Even Knowing It': There Was 'No Sign of Problems'

Before they announced their divorce, Jeff Bezos and his ex MacKenzie “grew apart without even knowing it,” a source tells PEOPLE.

The Amazon CEO, 55, and the author, 48, made a joint statement last week in which they revealed they were separating after 25 years of marriage.

“As a couple, they were outwardly warm and happy together with no sign of problems,” says the source.

Adds the insider, “Jeff is so busy in many areas where he is communicating with all kinds of people and traveling. On the other hand, MacKenzie is low-key, writing fiction and working on other projects while raising their children.”

MacKenzie, who has written two books, met Bezos after she graduated from Princeton University. The two were engaged within three months after their first date, and married within six, according to Vogue.

“Jeff is the opposite of me,” she told the magazine in 2013. “He likes to meet people. He’s a very social guy. Cocktail parties for me can be nervewracking. The brevity of conversations, the number of them — it’s not my sweet spot.”

Bezos — who is worth an estimated $137 billion — has found a new love in news anchor Lauren Sanchez. The 49-year-old is also ending her marriage to her husband of 13 years, Hollywood agent Patrick Whitesell.

Sanchez and Bezos are “in constant contact,” a different source told PEOPLE, adding the public knowledge of their romance “has had zero impact on their relationship.”

The two struck up a working relationship while collaborating on several projects together and “gradually” fell for each other, the source said. “It’s a very serious relationship.”

They were both at Amazon’s Golden Globes afterparty on Jan. 6, but haven’t been photographed together since the tech mogul and his wife announced they were separating in a joint statement he shared on Twitter.

“We feel incredibly lucky to have found each other and deeply grateful for every one of the years we have been married to each other,” they said in the statement.

Bezos and MacKenzie share four children: three sons and a daughter. Sanchez and Whitesell have two children together, and she has an older son from a previous relationship.
