Heartstopper star confirms exit from Netflix show ahead of season 3

Heartstopper stars tease season two of Netflix series

Sebastian Croft ,who plays the toxic Ben Hope in Heartstopper, has confirmed that he has left the hit Netflix show.

He is currently appearing in the eagerly anticipated season 2, which arrived on the channel last week, however, this series marks the end of his storyline.

His character was integral to the plot up until now as he was involved in a toxic relationship with Charlie Spring (played by Joe Locke).

However, spoiler alert, season two sees him reveal to Charlie he will be leaving Truham and apologising to him for his past behaviour.

After so much drama between them, Charlie doesn’t let him off that easily though and instead of forgiving him he tells him exactly how his behaviour has affected him.

“[Heartstopper creator] Alice [Oseman] and I both felt strongly about him not having a redemption arc,” Sebastian told Netflix companion site Tudum.

His storyline ends with him standing outside the Lambert queer art show as the character rejects an animated rainbow ocean doodle appearing on screen.

“I really wanted Ben to have a Heartstopper moment in some way,” Croft explained. “I see this beautiful world of Heartstopper and then Ben who can’t be welcomed in.

“I feel like lots of people would connect with that feeling of being scared to become part of the community and where you fit in.”

Alice Oseman offered further insight into the exit saying it would have been “needlessly cruel” for Charlie to offer Ben “any form of redemption arc on-screen”.

“Particularly as the aftershocks of Ben’s manipulation are still causing Charlie pain. Ben can become a better person, but Charlie should not have to witness that, endorse it, or offer any forgiveness. And so he won’t,” she said.

The show has officially been renewed for a third season but other than Swebastian’s departure nothing else is known about what we can expect.

“People who have read the comics will know what is going to happen but I don’t want to spoil it for people who haven’t been reading the comics,” Alice said.

“I think [Season two’s ending] just sets up that conversation for next season. We know that Charlie loves Nick, and I think we know that Nick loves Charlie as well. It’s just about when and how they’re going to say that to each other.”

Heartstopper seasons one and two are available to stream on Netflix.
