Ex-This Morning star admits they’re ‘surprised it’s taken so long’

Phillip Schofield: Esther McVey questions This Morning’s future

On Friday, May 26 via a statement to The Daily Mail, former This Morning star Phillip Schofield revealed that he had an affair with a younger male colleague on the show.

Since then, co-star and friend Holly Willoughby has broken her silence on the matter and said it was “hurtful” to know the truth.

In a statement published on her Instagram story, she said: “It’s taken time to process yesterday’s news.

“When reports of this relationship first surfaced, I asked Phil directly if this was true and was told it was not.

“It’s been very hurtful to now find out that this was a lie.”

Former This Morning star Martin Daubney often featured on the show to give his opinion on the latest news bulletins with the presenters.

After six years, he stepped away and became a presenter on GB News where he has recently given his opinion on Phillip and Holly’s drama.

In a discussion about the affair, Martin revealed that during his time as a contributor, rumours were already circulating regarding Schofield’s relationship with a fellow colleague.

He said: “I was a close friend of the show. I was a regular panellist, a debater, having very intimate debates about being a father, about mental health, about pornography addiction.

“I was there a lot. I consider myself very close to Phillip and Holly. And what I’ll say is this: These rumours have been going around for a long time, a long time.

“Everybody talked about this on set. And the thing I’m surprised about the most is that it’s taken so long for this to come out.”

ITV released another statement on Saturday afternoon and claimed that it carried out an investigation in early 2020 regarding the rumours.

It stated: “ITV can confirm that when rumours of a relationship between Phillip Schofield and an employee of ITV first began to circulate in early 2020 ITV investigated.

“Both parties were questioned and both categorically and repeatedly denied the rumours as did Phillip’s then agency YMU.

“In addition, ITV spoke to a number of people who worked on This Morning and were not provided with, and did not find, any evidence of a relationship beyond hearsay and rumour.”

Holly is set to return to This Morning on June 5, with no word as to who her new co-host will be at this time.

This Morning airs weekdays from 10am on ITV.
