EastEnders explains Cindy’s return from the dead as past life revealed
After a 25 year absence, the truth about Cindy Beale’s whereabouts was finally revealed to fans on Thursday, when a special 35 minute episode explained the secret behind the Walford icon’s secret identity as Rose Knight.
As regular viewers will know, the last time we saw Cindy Beale in the soap prior to this week’s revelations, Cindy had widely been believed to have died in childbirth, while serving time in prison for the attempted murder of her husband Ian Beale.
However, as it emerged on tonight’s episode, Cindy had not died in prison, but instead had turned informant for her former cellmate, and had been granted a plea deal which allowed her to enter a witness protection programme in exchange for helping the police.
While in hiding and living under her new identity, Cindy had met and fallen in love with George Knight, who appears to be none the wiser about her history and connection with Albert Square.
While living as Rose, Cindy went on to have two children, daughters Gina and Anna, but they too were none the wiser to her real identity, or had any idea where she was now, despite George’s frequent attempts to contact her.
Having walked out on George for reasons unknown, Cindy was later seen in Thursday’s episode living with ex-husband Ian once again, as they pair lived an idyllic life in the French countryside!
How and when exactly Cindy and Ian had crossed paths again, particularly given her history with him, which involved everything from hiring a hitman to kill him – and even kidnapping their children!
While the show will no doubt fill in the blanks over the coming weeks about the couple’s curious reunion, one person who is keen to see the story unfold is Cindy Beale actress, Michelle Collins.
Speaking about her return to the BBC One soap, Michelle admitted it was a “surreal” experience, but admitted the offer had simply been too good to refuse!
"It's surreal. It’s nerve-wracking but it’s also very exciting," she said, "Do you know what, I didn’t think they could ever do it. Life is about timing. If it had happened five years ago, I probably would’ve said no. Adam and I were both touring and he’d mentioned it to me.
"I said to my agent, 'Obviously it’s ridiculous, but let’s just go and meet Chris'. And we had this breakfast meeting and he got his laptop out and he reeled it off and we both went, ‘wow’. Oh my God. It was incredible. And I was just like, actually, maybe this could work.”
Describing the writing as “genius” she soon added: "Cindy was completely living this double life. It’s feasible. You have to have a back story of where she was, where has she been, what has she been doing. It’s genius the way it’s all been put together.”
EastEnders continues Monday to Thursday at 7:30pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer
