DOC Martin viewers were left distraught after the penultimate episode revealed a shocking twist.

Wednesday evening's instalment saw Martin as he grappled with the decision to leave his quaint, idyllic Cornish town for a lucrative position in London.

The series finale will focus on the good doctor's life-changing decision to stay in the idyllic town of Portwenn or move to the capital in a brand new job role.

Despite trying to keep the news on the down low, word travels fast in small towns, and Martin's decision to leave his home of ten years rapidly became public knowledge.

In a town with limited GP access, the town's response to the closure of it's surgery was less than positive – as was the response of fans on Twitter.

Viewers took to the social media platform to voice their objections to Martin's decision.

Alongside an array of sad-faced emojis, one person begged: "Please don't leave. It will honestly be sad."

Echoing their comments, someone else said: "I will be extremely sad if Doc Martin takes the job in London."

While a third viewer praised the character development on the show, adding: "Doc Martin's character development, from hating Portwenn and everyone in it, to not wanting to leave and thinking solely about his family."

Though the doctor appears to have made his decision, some viewers are holding out hope he might decide to stay.

The episode made no u-turn, however, as the final shot showed a loving Martin and Louisa looking out over the coastal village they called home for so many years.

Doc Martin returns to ITV at 9pm on Wednesday, 26 October.
