Disney’s live-action remake of Mulan will premiere in cinemas and Disney Plus
Walt Disney Pictures have announced the live action remake of Mulan will be released in cinemas as well as on Disney Plus in September.
The long-awaited film, which stars Yifei Liu as Mulan, will drop on September 4 and will be able to watch on Disney Plus for $29.99 (£22.00) and in cinemas in territories where Disney Plus is not available.
Walt Disney Co CEO Bob Chapek revealed why they decided to release it for streaming as well as in movie theatres: ‘Despite the ongoing challenges of the pandemic, we’ve continued to build on the incredible success of Disney+ as we grow our global direct-to-consumer businesses.
‘The global reach of our full portfolio of direct-to-consumer services now exceeds an astounding 100 million paid subscriptions — a significant milestone and a reaffirmation of our DTC strategy, which we view as key to the future growth of our company.’
Mulan was originally slated for release on March 27, but had to be pushed back due to the coronavirus pandemic.
It was among many film releases which were affected by cinemas being forced to close to slow the spread of the virus, and its provisional release date was moved several times.
The film had hosted its UK premiere on March 12, shortly before it was announced that the film would not be released on March 27 as planned due to the pandemic.
Liu Yifei, director Niki Caro, Ron Yuan, Jason Scott Lee and Yoson An had all attended the photocall in London’s Leicester Square thought the red carpet and media run had been cancelled.
Mulan’s budget is said to have been $200 million (£159 million) without including marketing fees, but the film received glowing reviews from critics who managed to attend screenings before lockdown began.
Mulan will be released on Disney Plus on September 4.
