Death in Paradise: ‘It is chaos out there’ Ardal O’Hanlon reveals filming difficulties

The BBC detective show Death in Paradise is known for its detectives solving the most dramatic murders in the quietest of exotic destinations. But tonight will see DI Jack Mooney’s (played by Ardal O’Hanlon) final performance before he is replaced by DI Neville Parker (Ralf Little). The big question is, how will he exit the show?

Viewers have seen a number of detectives over the years starting with the murdered DI Richard Poole (Ben Miller) who was replaced Humphrey Goodman (Kris Marshall) who left for love.

But whose footsteps will current detective Jack Mooney follow in?

In recent scenes, Jack has been getting closer to Anna Houghton (Nina Wadia) and said it would never be the same if he left the island without her, but are her intentions as pure as Jack believes?

Ardal has now spoken out about the difficulties and obstacles the crew faced when filming the show ahead of his exit.

Ardal told the Radio Times: “Four summers, 24 episodes and at least 24 murders.

“Most of which I solved with very little help from anybody else.

“But the heat and humidity when you first step off the plane is astonishing, you’re wet in the morning, wet in the night, wet in your costumes, wet in your bed.

“You’re damp for months on end” he explained.

Jack has been a staple of the show since 2017 but had recently revealed it was “high time to leave”.

His final episode as DI Jack Mooney will air on BBC One tonight and next week viewers will be introduced to his replacement.

Ardal explained: “I know Ralf from meeting him late at night in dens of iniquity in London. He’s a great bloke and a really smart actor with lots of charisma.

“I remember Kris Marshall telling me stuff when we handed over and it doesn’t sink in at the time.

He continued: “I told Ralf all the cool restaurants to go to, but the only real advice I could give him, other than preparation, is stay cool, literally and metaphorically, when things go wrong. Because they will go wrong.”

However, it seems there were other obstacles when filming, and it’s something viewers might have expected.

Ardal explained: “Nothing can prepare you for the noise, the sheer cacophony on the island.

“The sun goes down at six o’clock and then the frogs and the crickets kick in.

“They don’t stop for 12 hours, it gets louder and louder. Then the wild dogs start barking and start chasing the wild hens. It is chaos out there, madness.”

Ardal’s replacement, Ralf Little has admitted his mum thought taking the role of DI Neville Parker could be a disaster.

He told the Radio Times: “Mum went, ‘But what if no one likes you and they stop watching it?’

“I was like, ‘Thanks, Mum!’ So I hope I don’t affect Death in Paradise like George Clooney did Batman, so only Christian Bale can come in and revive it.

“We’re not supposed to reveal any details of how Ardal leaves and I join Death in Paradise, but it’s so exciting.”

Death in Paradise continues on BBC tonight at 9pm.
