Dead Lola makes surprise EastEnders return in heart-wrenching scenes

Lola Pearce (Danielle Harold) made a surprise return to EastEnders with a special video message for daughter Lexi (Isabella Brown) recorded prior to her tragic death.

The hairdresser, as viewers know, was diagnosed with a brain tumour last year, with doctors confirming that her condition was sadly terminal.

After being told that her palliative chemotherapy was no longer working, Lola prepared to say goodbye to her loved ones, with emotional scenes last week seeing her pass away with Lexi and Jay Brown (Jamie Borthwick) nearby.

Lexi has struggled to come to terms with her mum’s death, leaving both Jay and Ben Mitchell (Max Bowden) incredibly concerned about her.

Ben wondered if it might benefit Lexi to open the memory box Lola made for her and, after giving it some thought, Jay agreed, with the two sitting down with Lexi later that evening.

Ben reminisced about Lola while showing Lexi the drawings she’d made for her mum years earlier, which Lola included in the box, but it was ultimately a special video message from her mum, recorded before her death, that left Lexi feeling better.

The short clip was a simple one, with Lola reiterating just how much she loves her daughter, encouraging her to seek support from Ben and Jay, who she stated will be there for her ‘every single step of the way’.

‘I love you darling’, she said. ‘So much. This is mummy over and out’.

Lexi was overwhelmed afterwards but told Jay and Ben that she intends to make Lola proud of her, sharing a hug with them.

Ben and Jay, meanwhile, sought comfort in a hug too, as they vowed to do as Lola asked of them and be there for Lexi.

When asked by Metro.co.uk at the British Soap Awards about what’s ahead for Jay – and if he would ever find love again – actor Jamie Borthwick told us that he didn’t know, but added that he’s got a chat with Chris Clenshaw, EastEnders’ boss, to discuss the future.

‘I’ve had scenes with other females but nothing of any value in that way. He’s not getting [into a relationship] with them.’

EastEnders continues Thursday June 8 at 7:30pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
