Black Mirror star up for potential return for ‘toxic character’

Douglas Hodge starred as Rollo Haynes in Black Museum, the season four finale episode of the anthology series.

While viewers meet him as the owner of the sordid museum, which takes twisted tech that’s backfired and puts it on display for the evil stories behind them, fans soon become aware he had far more intricate links to the stories than he first let on.

In fact, as part of TCKR Systems, which ran out of St. Juniper’s hospital, he actually had an intrinsic role in the development of the terrifying technology that has haunted other stories in the show’s run.

While he met quite the ‘shocking’ ending (no spoilers), Black Mirror’s set up, which jumps back and forth in time, gives him the opportunity to make a return.

Speaking exclusively to Daily Express about the character, Hodge said: “I loved him.

“I’ve worked most of my career in theatre, Pinter and Shakespeare, and you would often go and do a TV series or something else and it would be okay.

“But when I came to that script, it was as good as any script I’d ever read in the theatre. It was just perfectly made. You didn’t really need to change anything. I mean, a brilliant brilliant writer [Charlie Brooker] and brilliant ideas.”

“I could happily play him every week. I mean, it’s completely like swallowing a thimble of poison to play someone so toxic!” he laughed over the potential return.

“I have a lot of people go ‘oh my god, it’s him!’ and I go, ‘No, no, I’m okay. I’m not you know, a supremacist or anything’.

“But there’s something delicious about him that would have been lovely to explore even more.”

In the meantime, Hodge is returning to a completely different world altogether – the completely tech-absent, hilariously complicated world of 17th century Russia in The Great.

Starring as Velementov, the vodka-swilling, slightly tragic former general of the country’s military, he becomes an essential part of Catherine’s (Elle Fanning) as she tries to take over Russia.

A far cry from the sadistic Rollo, Velementov is on a mission to find love as season three returns to UK screens on July 14.

“[He’s] Drunk, kind of as a lost as ever,” laughed Hodge. “I think ‘self-medicating’ is the best word to say. Yeah, well this season he does sort of fall in love – and he falls in love about every three minutes, Velementov.

“They always say ‘Oh, it’s just lust’ but I always believe he’s a born romantic.”

The Great is available on Lionsgate+ from July 14.
