Bill Lawrence’s Doozer Inks Big New Overall Deal With Warner Bros. TV, Sells Brent Morin Comedy To NBC
EXCLUSIVE: Bill Lawrence and his Doozer production company are staying put at Warner Bros. TV with a new rich multi-year overall deal. Under the significant, eight-figure pact, which I hear is for five years, the company has sold a department store comedy to NBC starring and co-written by comedian Brent Morin, who starred on Doozer’s NBC comedy series Undateable.
This is Lawrence’s third consecutive deal at WBTV where the Scrubs creator has been since 2011 when former NBC head of comedy Jeff Ingold joined him at Doozer. The two will continue to work together.
Co-written by Morin and former Undateable writer Matt Hausfater, the untitled NBC multi-camera comedy centers on Andy Hewitt (Morin) who, in a desperate attempt to prove himself to his family after losing his dream job, has no choice but to take a retail job at the world’s most fashionable department store.
Hausfater executive produces with Lawrence and Ingold. Morin, who headlined a Netflix standup special, I’m Brent Morin, co-executive produces with Doozer’s Liza Katzer.
This is the third broadcast sale for Doozer this season, joining drama Secret Six, based on DC comics, which has a pilot production commitment at CBS, and a dramedy at ABC starring Scrubs alumna Sarah Chalke.
Expanding into hourlong series had been a goal for Doozer, which also produced the CW’s one-hour dramedy Life Sentence and has the upcoming ABC action light drama series Whiskey Cavalier starring Scott Foley and Lauren Cohan.
Lawrence comes from half-hour comedy background having created Scrubs and co-created Spin City and Cougar Town. While at WBTV, Doozer also has produced comedy series Ground Floor for TBS, which Lawrence co-created, Undateable for NBC and Surviving Jack for Fox as well as the hourlong Rush Hour reboot for CBS, also co-created by Lawrence, in addition to several pilots.
The company also is branching out into streaming with pending sales.
Lawrence is the latest top creator/producer on WBTV’s roster to re-up their deal this year, joining Greg Berlanti and Ava DuVernay.
Lawrence and Doozer are repped by ICM Partners and attorney Jared Levine. Morin, who also starred in Rooster Teeth’s Crunch Time, is repped by CAA, 3Arts, and attorney Patti Felker. Hausfater, who also is developing an animated show at Amazon and was a writer on Netflix’s Club De Cuervos, is repped by UTA, Kaplan Perrone and Hansen Jacobson.
