BGT illusionist Darcy Oake’s death-defying trick ‘rumbled’ by eagle-eyed fans
BGT judges were on the edge of their seats watching Darcy Oake perform his death-defying stunt last night – but it seems some viewers weren't as petrified.
The Canadian illusionist was taking part in Britain's Got Talent: The Champions , where he climbed into a box and was locked inside with only his hands visible from the outside.
He was then hoisted into the air and the box exploded, making it seem as though Darcy hadn't escaped in time.
However when he appeared on a separate platform in the middle of the arena, one eagle-eyed viewer blew the lid open on his stunt.
Taking to Twitter 'Anna in Fermanagh' wrote: 'He had left the box through a trap door or sideflap on box before that countdown clock started. The clock and darkness were a distraction.'
Another suggested: "There was somebody already in the box..why did he let ant put one cuff on him…when he appeared the other side of the arena he still had the same cuff on the same hand ?????
However, some were in support of Darcy's clever act: "I think Darcy is great! He's a fantastic illusionist! Of course it's a trick and he was never in any danger, but that's literally the point, he's a magician. The way he presents his act is unique but also very professional. Love his act!
"I have watched it, re-watched it and watched it once again, I still can't work out how you did it @DarcyOake brilliant, can't wait to see what you do in the final
For Darcy's trick each hand appeared through a hole in the box and were handcuffed together, while the box featured a separate lock for him to undo on top.
There were four fuses at the bottom of the box which was raised 20ft in the air, and they were set on fire.
He gave himself 56 seconds to get out, revealing the box would explode after this time regardless of if he got out or not.
As the trick began, judges Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden, Alesha Dixon and David Walliams watched on in horror.
They weren't alone, as those in the audience began to fear the worst as the timer reached closer and closer to zero.
Darcy was shown trying to escape the handcuffs and eventually the box, as the fire at the bottom traveled up the fuses with speed.
Suddenly time ran out, and everyone in the audience screamed as the box exploded, while the illusionist was nowhere to be seen.
As gasps echoed around the arena and the look of worry remained etched on everybody's faces, the judges were also panicked about the situation having just unfolded.
Suddenly though Darcy appeared on a separate platform in the middle of the arena, leaving everyone stunned and unsure how he pulled off the act.
Britain's Got Talent: The Champions continues next Saturday evening on ITV.
