Ariana Grande pays tribute to late ex Mac Miller and talks split from former fiance Pete Davidson on new album Thank U, Next
The singer's second album in just six months was released earlier today, and track Ghostin has caught everybody's attention – with the emotional ballad seemingly detailing the impact her split from Mac had on her relationship with former fiance Pete Davidson.
, 25, previously told a fan on Twitter that Ghostin is about "feeling badly [sic] for the person you're with because you love somebody else.
"Feeling badly because he can tell he can't compare…. And how I should be ghosting him."
In the heartbreaking song, Ariana reveals that she would cry herself to sleep while her partner was asleep next to her.
She sings: "I know you hear me when I cry, I try to hold it in at night while you're sleeping next to me."
The star then says: "Look at the cards that we've been dealt, if you were anybody else [we] probably wouldn't last a day."
In addition to Mac's passing in September last year, Ariana suffered huge trauma in May 2017 when her Manchester concert was targeted by a terrorist – killing 22 people.
Pete has also suffered heartache in the past, with his father dying in the 9/11 terrorist attack, and the comic also struggling with borderline personality disorder and bullying.
Later in the song, Ariana praises her partner for being "so good" with all that she is "putting him through", the chorus then follows with the lyrics: "I know that it breaks your heart when I cry again over him.
"I know that it breaks your heart when I cry again instead of ghosting him."
The brunette beauty admits that she has "a whole lot of baggage" and that she would wish that she were with "him instead", presumably meaning Mac.
The song has hugely impacted Ariana's fans, who took to social media to share their reaction.
One wrote: "GHOSTIN IS REALLY ABOUT MISSING MAC WHILE SHE WAS WITH PETE I CANT STOP F***ING CRYING".
Another added: "Ghostin is…….. the fact that it's about Mac and she feels bad for crying cause she's hurting Pete…the whole concept…. I'm crying way more than I should."
A third said: "Ghostin made me feel so close to Ariana. I’m so heartbroken to know that what she went through with Pete and Mac literally tore her apart and broke her down.
"I hate knowing that she would cry herself to sleep, thinking of Mac, f***ing gets to me, you know?"
Ariana first met Mac when she was a teenager, with the two going on to strike up a relationship in 2016.
The pair dated for two years, with Mac supporting Ariana through her PTSD following the Manchester bombing, but they split in May 2018.
Soon after, Ariana began dating comedian Pete and the ex-couple got engaged before ending their romance in October – one month after Mac's death.
Ariana has paid tribute to Mac on social media multiple times since his passing, with one Instagram post reading: "I adored you from the day I met you when I was nineteen and I always will.
"I can’t believe you aren’t here anymore. I really can’t wrap my head around it. We talked about this. So many times. I’m so mad, I’m so sad I don’t know what to do.
"You were my dearest friend. For so long. Above anything else. I’m so sorry I couldn’t fix or take your pain away. I really wanted to. The kindest, sweetest soul with demons he never deserved. I hope you’re okay now. Rest."
