Angela Griffin exposes hidden tribute to old character in Waterloo Road scene

Waterloo Road's Kim Campbell has had a major transformation since viewers last saw her in 2010 but the actress who plays her revealed she's still "old Kim" at heart.

While Angela Griffin's character was known for her gentle nature as head of pastoral care, Kim has stepped into the role of headteacher and is completely different.

Nowadays, the character is quite a step back from the pupils and isn't involved as much as she once was but Angela, 46, has opened up about the drastic incident which caused Kim to change.

Speaking exclusively to Daily Star, the actress revealed that viewers will see subtle nods to the Kim they're used to as she balances a managerial role.

In emotional scenes, as Kim prepared to leave the newly-named Waterloo Road school, viewers saw her admire a picture of her son Dexter, before taking off her heeled shoes and slipping into a pair of Birkenstocks.

During her previous tenure as Kim, the character was known for her love of Birkenstocks and flowy skirts as she waltzed around the Rochdale-based school.

"It's those little things that we really put in that you go 'if you do this, do you think anyone will know?'," she said before adding: "It was really important to go 'she is this new-fangled Kim but her heart is still old Kim.

"One of the real attractions of coming back was we were doing a long-running show, when we first started it was a drama, with the rebirth, we are a drama.

"There's going to be seven episodes going out, we're not churning this show out, there's so much work and effort going into it."

Speaking about returning to the show alongside Donte Charles star Adam Thomas and Katie Griffiths who plays Chlo Charles, Angela said: "That's why I came back because she's changed, she's evolved. She's not Kim of old.

"It's boring to play the same character, there's only a certain amount of kids you can help with their teen pregnancies, it's other people to come and fill that role.

"When it was pitched to me that she had gone down the managerial route, there's an absolute reason why she has seemingly really changed, which comes out as the series progresses."

Angela went on to say: "She's had a big trauma in her life, she's incredibly hurt, she's in a lot of pain and is unable to take on the pain and the horrors of the kids at the school.

"Obviously as head, you're across it all but not on a day-to-day basis, you're not the one who's having to go around the houses and so on.

"She has distanced herself away and ultimately, she's Kim, she's a pastoral teacher, she is someone who cares about the individuals, she's trying not to but she doesn't always necessarily succeed and I think it makes her so interesting."

Waterloo Road airs at 8pm on BBC One with all episodes now available on BBC iPlayer.
