Zinchenko contradicts Guardiola by saying Man City CAN win quadruple and overshadow Man Utd's 1999 treble winners

Young full back Alex Zinchenko has gone further than his manager and reiterated his belief that the Sky Blues could win all four of the trophies they are competing for this term.

Last month, Guardiola told Sky Sports that the idea of his team capturing the Carabao Cup, FA Cup, Premier League and Champions League trophies in 2019 was “ridiculous”.

But Zinchenko, who returned to City’s starting line-up for their 6-0 demolition of Chelsea yesterday, is confident that the achievement is not beyond them.

The 22-year-old told reporters: "Hopefully we can win every title. We are going to fight for every one of them. Hopefully we can win all four.”

Were Man City to do so, it'd be the first time a Premier League team had ever won four major trophies – eclipsing the achievement of Sir Alex Ferguson's Manchester United side who won the treble in 1999.

He added: "We are still fighting for the title and we have to have full focus on our game now. I hope Liverpool are going to drop some points in the next game.

“But first, we have to focus on us.”

Zinchenko was praised for his ‘tireless performance’ in yesterday’s win, which saw him provide assists for Sergio Aguero’s first goal and Raheem Sterling’s second.

He said after the match: “Everyone involved in our team is ready to play against Chelsea and these kind of teams. It was a big game and we prepared well. We played like a real family."

In spite of his manager’s reservations, the defender had previously admitted that the chance of winning every trophy on offer was very much in the forefront of players’ minds at the Etihad.

He said in January: “We think about this every single day and every training session – we can win everything, and that's why we are here.”

City travel to Germany to take on Schalke in the Champions League round of 16 this week as they try to make the Ukrainian’s dream a reality.

Their chance to claim the first trophy of a potential quadruple comes next weekend, as they once again face Chelsea in the Carabao Cup Final at Wembley.
