SEATTLE — The pitching-thin Yankees took another hit Thursday, as Michael King was placed on the 10-day injured list with a right middle finger contusion.
He was replaced on the roster by Tyler Wade, who was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and was with the team on the taxi squad.
Aaron Boone said before the Yankees’ 4-0 loss to the Mariners that King suffered a “freak accident” while working out, as his finger jammed between two weights.
X-rays were negative on Wednesday, but King tried to play catch prior to Thursday’s game and it was “not good,” according to Boone, and the Yankees made the roster move.
Boone had mentioned King as a possibility to get the start on Friday against the Astros. Nestor Cortes Jr. will take the mound in Houston, followed by Gerrit Cole on Saturday and Jameson Taillon on Sunday to close out the first half.
King has struggled in a starting role, but pitched much better out of the bullpen — including in his last appearance, when he tossed four scoreless innings in relief on Saturday against the Mets.
Wade had been optioned Sunday, when left-hander Wandy Peralta returned from the IL, as the Yankees went with an extra pitcher.
