Wayne Rooney slams 'disrespectful' Derby owner Mel Morris for keeping him in dark as club entered administration

WAYNE ROONEY slammed ‘disrespectful’ Derby County owner Mel Morris for not telling him the club entered administration. 

The Rams plunged into financial crisis last week and were hit with a 12-point deduction, leaving them bottom of the Championship. 

And boss Rooney, 35, was forced to find out about the club’s situation on TV as he hasn’t spoken to Morris since the start of August. 

When asked about the communication between himself and Morris, Roo said: "I just found it a little bit disrespectful, to be honest.

"With 12 points, it is going to be a challenge and I have challenged the players to make history – no-one has [beat relegation] previously."

The former England and Manchester United skipper said he had received "no phone calls or messages" from the owner for six weeks.

Morris revealed had invested over £200million in an attempt to get the club to the Premier League but had a £20m loss in revenue due to the Covid pandemic. 

Derby announced Andrew Hosking, Carl Jackson and Andrew Andronikou from Quantuma as joint administrators on Wednesday.

They confirmed Roo’s Rams job is safe despite looking for ways to reduce costs. 

And as SunSport exclusively revealed yesterday, Rooney and his players have been asked to accept pay deferrals. 

Rooney added: "I am here to fight for this club, I am not prepared to walk away. 

"We will get through this, there is no worry the club will go into liquidation. What is important is no decision is rushed through."

Administrators Hosking and Jackson revealed they have already held talks with prospective buyers of the club. 

Hosking said: “A club of this magnitude is such that it does have a viable future moving forward. 

"No one's underestimating the task ahead of ourselves because clearly, there will need to be some difficult decisions made over the coming week or two in terms of whether we need to consider if there need to be any efficiencies made.

"But there is a considerable degree of interest in this club. A lot of it was expressed prior to administration.

'NOT INSURMONTABLE'

“Now that the club is in administration, notwithstanding the points deduction and clearly the distress to the supporters, the staff and suppliers to the club, we do consider that the position to be able to make a successful conclusion to the story is now really very, very practical.

“We don't consider the obstacles that we face at this stage insurmountable.”

Derby face a trip to Sheffield United on Saturday.
