Watch as Edouard Mendy is given hero's welcome by Chelsea team-mates after Afcon winner returns to squad

THE CHELSEA team gave Edouard Mendy a rapturous ovation as the Africa Cup of Nations winner returned to his club.

The 29-year-old goalkeeper saved a penalty to help Senegal beat Egypt on penalties to lift the trophy for the very first time on Sunday.

After heading back to his homeland to celebrate that triumph with his international colleagues, he is now looking to get his hands on more silverware.

Mendy, who shared epic footage of the party scenes in Senegal, has arrived in the Middle East to link-up with Chelsea ahead of the Club World Cup in Abu Dhabi.

The Blues shared a video of the stopper heading into the camp, and his Blues pals were delighted to see him.

A large group of them clapped and cheered for Mendy – whose exploits earned him the Goalkeeper of the Tournament at Afcon.

The former Rennes ace received a hug from Jorginho as well as a warm welcome from Matteo Kovacic and Antonio Rudiger in the video.

He will now be desperate to create more history by winning the Fifa competition in UAE, which mark the first time Chelsea have ever done it.

They played in the tournament a decade ago but lost to Brazilian side Corinthians in the final in Yokohama.

The Premier League side face Al Hilal in the semi-final later today – although Blues assistant Zsolt Low refused to confirm whether Mendy would play.

Speaking yesterday, he said: “He has to arrive first, we have to check him and talk to him. We'll see if it's possible he plays, maybe.

“The celebration was very important for him and all African players to win. He's very happy to do an amazing performance and also very important for him to celebrate with his teammates.

“We have two amazing goalkeepers. Mendy had a fantastic performance to win the Africa Cup of Nations and be the best goalkeeper, but Kepa does an amazing job with us here.”
