USA star Gio Reyna protected by riot police as he takes corner in hostile El Salvador stadium

UNITED STATES star Gio Reyna was given a hostile welcome by El Salvador fans as the two countries clashed in World Cup qualification.

Borussia Dortmund star Reyna, 18, is used to dealing with big crowds at club level.

The talented attacking midfielder is regularly roared on by the Yellow Wall, while also dealing with away days against the likes of Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig.

But it's doubtful that he's ever been surrounded by riot police while trying to take a corner.

That was exactly what happened, however, in the second half of last night's clash with El Salvador at Estadio Cusclatan.

The largest stadium in Central America with a 53,000 capacity, El Salvador's national arena can create an intimidating atmosphere for any visiting side.

And it clearly did the trick, with the USA failing to break them down.

A side featuring stars such as Reyna, Juventus ace Weston McKennie, Barcelona's Sergino Dest and new Norwich signing Josh Sargent were held to a 0-0 draw by the home side.

The match represented a less than ideal start to Qatar 2022 qualifying for Gregg Berhalter's side, who are aiming to return to the World Cup having failed to make Russia 2018.

US fans online were hardly enthused by the result.

One sarcastically wrote: "We have a bright future."

While another ranted: "For those fans that jumped on the bandwagon over the summer, this match was a prime example of what CONCACAF WC qualifying is like: Cr** field, cr** weather, cr** refereeing, generally cr** game play.

"It will take European-based players time to get used to it."
