Spurs star Eric Dier branded the defeat against Colchester ‘embarrassing’ as he walked off the pitch, according to reports – The Sun

ERIC DIER summed up Tottenham’s shock Carabao Cup defeat at Colchester United in one word: “Embarrassing.”

Last season’s Champions League finalists failed to find a way past the League Two minnows at the JobServe Community Stadium as they were dumped out of the competition on penalties following the goalless draw.

And midfielder Dier, one of those handed an opportunity to impress, was allegedly spotted by several journalists uttering “that was embarrassing” to team-mate Victor Wanyama after the loss.

Despite that, the 25-year-old did vow afterwards that he and his Spurs team-mates would bounce back from the embarrassment.

'WEREN'T GOOD ENOUGH'

The England international, making his first appearance of the campaign, said: “We’ve been through periods like this before, with this group together, and we know what we need to do to get back on track.

“We need to be humble, be able to recognise what we need to do better – each and every one of us. And work even harder than we have been to get things going in the right direction.

“We controlled the whole game, they had no shots on target. We weren’t good enough in their half, every player, we weren’t good enough at making the final pass or final run to finish off our plays and score.

“I think we controlled the game, started well, on the front foot from the beginning but we got a bit sloppy in the final 10 minutes before half-time.

“In the second half the game was a bit more open because we were trying to score and they had the opportunity on the counter attack but still didn’t really come close. We didn’t do enough around their box to score.”

'UNSETTLED'

Meanwhile, Spurs boss Maurico Pochettino says he needs time to overcome the “different agendas in the squad” following the dismal defeat.

That followed on from his previous comments about his squad being “unsettled” this season.

Uncertainty surrounds the future of players such Christen Eriksen, Danny Rose, Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen, while Dier has also fallen out of favour.

And the Argentine admits a squad that has been largely stable for the past five years now needs a period of certainty.
