Son Heung-min donates £100k to victims of South Korean forest fire that left 135 homes decimated

THOUSANDS of people were evacuated from their homes during wildfires in South Korea earlier this month and Son Heung-min has donated £100,000 to those affected.

The player's home region of Gangwon, in the north-east of the country, was hit by a huge blaze believed to have been started by a spark at a transformer near Goseong County.

An estimated 135 homes were destroyed with two dead after high winds slept the flames across the area.

A national emergency was declared as fire fighters put out the fire, leading to Tottenham winger Son sending the donation.

"It's nothing compared to what the victims have sacrificed,” he said, as quoted by Goal.

“Although I'm living abroad, I know what's happening in my home country.

“I think it's something I should do when there's a big disaster in my home country.

“I believe money does not matter. The most important thing is a mind to do something for the victims."

It isn't the first time Son has put his hand in his pocket to help those back home.

Following his success in the Asian Games and the subsequent special dispensation from South Korean military service, he donated £70,000 to the army and its personnel.

Spurs fans are making the case for him to be named Premier League Player of the Year after registering 12 goals and six assists in 27 appearances.

The 4-0 beating of Huddersfield on Saturday put the club third with Son's winner giving them a one-goal lead in the Champions League quarter-final versus Manchester City.
