Ryan Lochte back in competition, opens up about life outside the pool

After serving a 14-month ban from competitive swimming for violating anti-doping rules, Ryan Lochte made his return Wednesday as he competed in the 2019 Phillips 66 National Championships in Palo Alto, California.

Lochte’s first event back was a 200-meter individual medley time trial in which he posted a 1:57.88, the fourth-best time by an American this season and fast enough to qualify him for the 2020 Olympic trials, according to SwimSwam. He’s set to compete in four more events this week as he’s entered in the 100 butterfly, 100 backstroke, 200 freestyle and 400 IM.

“I’m having fun swimming again,” Lochte said (via USA Today). “And I haven’t had fun since the 2012 Olympics. So it’s been a long time where I can honestly say I’m stepping out on that pool deck with a big smile on my face, and I owe it all to my kids and my wife. They’ve been my backbone throughout this whole journey these past three years ago.

“I’m having fun again, and it’s awesome. I owe it all to them.”
