And Betfair have seen a big move in the market with former midfielder Van Bronckhorst ahead of Alex Neil and Derek McInnes as the most likely candidates to replace Gerrard.
Frank Lampard and John Terry were in the mix behind Gary McAllister – but have all lengthened.
McAllister is likely to go to Villa with Gerrard while Lampard has been linked with Norwich and is now out to 14/1 from 4/1.
Gerrard is Villa’s number one target following Smith’s sacking and knows Christian Purslow from his time at Liverpool.
Gerrard helped Rangers win the Scottish title last season – finishing the season unbeaten – to stop Celtic winning 10 in a row.
And they’re four points clear this season after a shaky start.
Rangers next manager odds:
- Giovanni van Bronckhorst 2/1
- Derek McInnes 10/3
- Alex Neil 6/1
- Gary McAllister 15/2
- Michael Beale 9/1
- Kjetil Knutsen 10/1
- John Terry 11/1
- Frank Lampard 14/1
- Dean Smith 14/1
- Ronald Koeman 14/1
- Gennaro Gattuso 17/1
- Michael O’Neil 20/1
- Slaven Bilic 20/1
- Frank de Boer 22/1
- Ronald de Boer 25/1
Also in the market today is Rangers coach Michael Beale and former players Barry Ferguson and the De Boer brothers.
However Rangers legend Ally McCoist thinks Gerrard could stay at Rangers and move straight to Liverpool when the time is right.
He told talkSPORT: “I think he can go straight to Liverpool. He absolutely can.
“I just think there’s a greater risk (going to Aston Villa first), but it is a possibility Woodsy.
“What is the gauge of success now at Villa? Is it top eight? Top six?
“Unfortunately Dean Smith wasn’t given time and I think he should have been.
“I’m very well aware how cut-throat the business is now.
“Simon is right in everything he says apart from one thing, for some reason he doesn’t believe you can go straight from Rangers to Liverpool.
“That baffles me, considering it has been done before.
“He’s right in what he says about the league and the quality of it and there’s only effectively two teams that can win it.
“But with that comes more pressure. So it’s a big, big decision if the reports are right that Villa are to make an approach to speak to Steven at Rangers.
“Rangers are well within their rights to say ‘no we aren’t letting you talk to him’ which would be interesting.”
