Olympics Day 8 highlights: Jamaica sweep 100m final as Team GB strike relay gold
Team GB took their medal haul to 26 after day eight of action at the Toyko Olympics and there was plenty of drama on a huge Saturday of action.
Jamaica dominate 100m final
Jamaica secured a dominant 1-2-3 in the 100m final with Elaine Thompson-Herah defending her Olympic title.
With an incredible time of 10.61 seconds, she becomes the second fastest woman in history, just 0.12 seconds behind American Florence Griffith Joyner with her record set 33 years ago.
Thompson-Herah duelled with her countrywoman Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce in the early stages but soon took control.

Shericka Jackson completed the Jamaican trio in third place.
Great Britain’s Dina Asher-Smith failed to qualify for the final, revealing in a heart-breaking interview that she had suffered a torn hamstring earlier this month.
Team GB win gold in mixed triathlon event
Jonny Brownlee finally has his Olympic gold medal after helping Great Britain to victory in the inaugural triathlon mixed relay.
Brownlee, Jess Learmonth, Georgia Taylor-Brown and Alex Ye finished 14 seconds ahead of the United States with France claiming the bronze medal.
“The Olympics? Completed it, mate” Brownlee said, having claimed bronze at London 2012 and silver at Rio 2016.
Three Brits in 800m final
Keely Hodgkinson, Alex Ball and Jemma Reekie have all qualified for Tuesday’s 800m final after superb performances on Saturday afternoon.
Reekie finished second in her race, recording a time of 1 minute and 59.77 seconds behind Jamaica’s Natoya Goule.
Bell made it through as one of the fastest third-place finishers in her race – won by American sensation Athing Mu – but Hodgkinson perhaps produced the best performance of the lot.
The teenager patiently bided her time, avoiding the jostling among the chasing pack before stepping out and closing down Chunyu Wang of China, securing first place after her dramatic late surge.
British trio also into men’s 100m semis
Zharnel Hughes, CJ Ujah and Reece Prescod have booked their place in Sunday’s 100m semi-finals.
Hughes secured automatic qualification after a second place finish in his heat with a season’s best time of 10.04.
Canada’s Andre de Grasse was the fastest qualifier with a time of 9.91 seconds.
More swimming gold for Team GB
Great Britain secured another gold medal in the swimming pool with their latest triumph coming in the mixed 4x100m relay.
The quartet of Kathleen Dawson, Adam Peaty, James Guy and Anna Hopkin secured the win with a world record time of 3 minutes 37.58 seconds to claim Team GB’s fourth gold medal in swimming this week – their seventh in total.
The 4x100m medley relay is a new event at the Games – featuring teams of two women and two men.
Team GB’s win came despite Dawson slipping on the wall at the start of race.
Another medal secured in boxing
Karriss Artingstall has secured a bronze medal after coming up short against Japan’s Sena Irie in her featherweight semi-final clash.
Lauren Price meanwhile guaranteed another medal for Team GB after dominating Atheyna Bylon in her middleweight contest. The no1 seed marches onto the semi-finals after a 5-0 win on the scorecards and will take on Nouchka Fontijn in the final four.
‘This has been my dream since I was an eight-year-old. Just to be an Olympian, let alone win a medal,’ Price said.
‘It is amazing to have medalled, but I always want more.
‘I always want to succeed no matter what tournament it is. I believe I am in the best shape of my career.’
Galal Yafai meanwhile has also progressed to the quarter-final stage after edging past Patrick Chinyemba in his flyweight contest.
