NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 13: Jericho loses to Naito as Tanahashi beats Omega

Tetsuya Naito finally gained revenge on Y2J after being haunted by the WWE legend for the past year.

The historic Tokyo Dome was the setting for New Japan Pro Wrestling’s annual extravaganza, with both men promising to end the other’s career.

Those threats became more real yesterday after the showdown was changed to a no disqualification, and the contest did not fail to disappoint.

Naito, who has been on the end of several sneak attacks from Jericho in 2018, took a leaf out of his enemy’s book to start the fight.

He attacked Y2J from behind before the bell had even rang as the champ posed with his title on the apron.

A huge brawl then ensued around ringside, with Naito on the receiving end of a nasty-looking spike DDT on a top.

A host of weapons were introduced as the thrilling contest continued, with kendo sticks, chairs, the IC Title and an exposed turnbuckle all used to inflict punishment.

It looked like Y2J had finally gained the upper hand as he nailed Naito with two codebreakers and locked him in the Walls of Jericho on numerous occasions.

However, the challenger refused to stay down and he claimed the victory by hitting a pair of Destino’s to regain the belt.

The joint main event was equally-matched in the entertainment stakes by Kenny Omega and Hiroshi Tanahashi.

In a bout that lasted around 40 minutes, it was the latter who emerged triumphant with a High Fly Flow.

Tanahashi is now a record eight-time IWGP Heavyweight Champion after becoming the first man to take the G1 Climax briefcase to the Tokyo Dome and convert it into victory.

Meanwhile, Will Ospreay hit Kota Ibushi with a Storm Breaker to win the NEVER Openweight Championship.

Juice Robinson struck Cody Rhodes with two Pulp Frictions to claim the IWGP United States Heavyweight Championship while “Switchblade” Jay White scored a pinfall victory over Kazuchika Okada.
