Mets trade Jason Vargas to Phillies
This is the other side of the Mets’ trade deadline plan.
After adding Marcus Stroman on Sunday to beef up their rotation, the Mets traded Jason Vargas to the rival Phillies on Monday evening, The Post’s Joel Sherman confirmed. The Mets, according to Sherman, are thus far known to be getting back Double-A catcher Austin Bossart.
Bossart is hitting .195 this season, but is known for his defensive abilities.
Vargas may not be the last pitcher traded off this staff before Wednesday’s 4 p.m. deadline with Noah Syndergaard, Zack Wheeler and Edwin Diaz all on the block.
Vargas was a disaster with the Mets last season, his first in Flushing after signing a two-year, $16 million deal.
The lefty, though, greatly improved as the 2019 season went on and was 6-5 with a 4.01 ERA before the trade went down.
Vargas, along with manager Mickey Callaway, was in the middle of a confrontation with a Newsday reporter earlier this season.
