The World Darts Championship is well underway and, as expected, celebrities from other fields have started flocking to the Alexandra Palace in London to sample one of the highlights of the sporting year.

Ahead of the tournament's first Friday evening session, which is traditionally played out amid a lively atmosphere, Scottish singer-songwriter Lewis Capaldi took to a stage with a difference.

First the walk-on, and Capaldi was determined to savour every moment. As he made his way to the stage, he spotted fellow artist Niall Horan and promptly planted a giant kiss on the lips of the former One Direction member.

The 26-year-old then went on to win a nine-dart challenge on the oche which, according to Sky Sports presenter Emma Paton, took some time to complete.

But as any darts player knows, a win is a win and Capaldi celebrated the moment wildly by ripping off his Christmas jumper, briefly flashing his belly, and hurling into the delighted crowd.

The scene drew comparisons with former darts ace Colin Lloyd, who famously stripped to the waist following a match at the 2012 World Championship.

“There are scenes of Colin Lloyd,” remarked Sky commentator Wayne Mardle. Meanwhile, current Ally Pally competitor Stephen Bunting tweeted: “Wow. Some celebration that.” A darts fan added: “Legendary cross over.”

Another reckons Capaldi bears an uncanny resemblance to a legend of the sport, saying: “Capaldi looks so much like Eric Bristow.”

Capaldi’s evening wasn’t over as he posed for a picture with the PDC dancers, who strut their stuff on stage ahead of matches. The night's action is underway, with rising star Beau Greaves set to make her Ally Pally debut against William O'Connor.
