Leishman fires, Day struggles in Maui

Marc Leishman has kept Tournament of Champions leader Gary Woodland within reach with a hot third round at the US PGA Tour event in Hawaii.

With big-hitting American Woodland seemingly on autopilot on top of the leaderboard, Leishman gave himself a fighting chance with a five-under-par 68 to be 13 under overall and four shots behind Woodland.

Woodland drained a 63-foot eagle putt at the par-five 15th hole at Kapalua during a solid 68 that elevated him to 17 under at the winners-only event in Maui.

Woodland leads four-time major champion Rory McIlroy (68) by three shots. The pair will play in the final group, while Leishman is outright third and will be in the group in front.

Sunday's final round at the 7500-yard Plantation course is forecast to be significantly less windy and Leishman will have to post a stellar round to catch Woodland.

Fellow Australian Jason Day's hopes faded with a two-over 75 that dropped him to four under and well out of contention.

The former world No.1 had a disastrous front nine on Saturday, soured by three bogeys and a double-bogey at the par-4 sixth.

The Tournament of Champions is an elite $US6.5 million ($A9.3 million) event for winners on the PGA Tour from the previous year and features no 36-hole cut.
