Judd Trump warns that best is yet to come while some may have peaked early
Judd Trump is confident that he has much better form to come in the latter stages of the World Snooker Championship, while some of his rivals may have shown their hand too early at the Crucible.
The world number one has made it through to the quarter-finals with wins over Liam Highfield and Dave Gilbert and has set-up a clash with Shaun Murphy in the last eight.
By Trump’s immensely high standards it has been steady and solid, but unspectacular so far, not quite hitting the heights of his blistering best form.
The Ace is far from concerned about that, though, quite the opposite as he is happy to keep plenty in the tank ahead of the business end of the event.
He feels that Kyren Wilson is in the same boat, ahead of his quarter-final meeting with Neil Robertson, while the Australian, Mark Selby and Mark Williams may have produced their best stuff early and could struggle to replicate that form from the quarter-finals onwards.
‘I think everyone is playing well in their own way,’ Trump told Eurosport. ‘Me and Kyren probably not played our absolute best, hopefully going along quietly, saving our best for the latter stages.
‘Mark Selby, Mark Williams and Neil [Robertson] have probably been taking the headlines at the moment but I would be surprised if you can keep that standard up for the 17 days so I’m quite happy to not play near my best and get through the first couple quite comfortably.
‘As I said before I think everyone is quietly confident that they’ve got a good chance here.’
Mark Selby and Mark Williams play each other in the last eight, with the other quarter-final between Anthony McGill and Stuart Bingham.
The bookmakers certainly feel Trump is going to find his best form as the world number one remains favourite to lift the trophy.
His next opponent is well aware of that and Murphy believes the pressure is off as a huge underdog in the quarter-finals.
‘Judd has been the player of the season in the past couple of years so he will be a massive favourite,’ said the Magician. ‘There is no pressure on me; I have a free crack at him and I am really looking forward to it.’
The quarter-finals are played over three sessions on Wednesday and Thursday in Sheffield.
