Jose Mourinho still digging out Luke Shaw as he warns Harry Maguire he will need to cover for the Man Utd left-back ‘many times’ – The Sun
JOSE MOURINHO has shown his tough love for Luke Shaw again as he warned Harry Maguire he will have to cover for the Red Devils left-back a lot this season.
The Portuguese coach was known for his harsh treatment of the England defender while in charge at Old Trafford.
United's back line seemed sloppy at the beginning of the Chelsea clash until Kurt Zouma handed them a penalty for a silly challenge on Marcus Rashford.
The England striker gave Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men the lead and the Red Devils went on to trash the Blues 4-0.
But Mourinho still found a way to have a dig at Shaw, 24, telling new Old Trafford boy Maguire he "will have to learn" how to play alongside the left-back.
The new Sky Sports pundit said: "When Maguire gets drawn out to cover for Luke Shaw, and he will learn through the season he will have to do this many times, he will learn this."
SAY NO MOU
Mourinho's relationship with Shaw at United was very complicated.
The Portuguese coach once called on the defender to "change his football brain".
He would often drop the left-back out of the squad, changed him at half-time against Brighton in the FA Cup and publicly criticised or fat-shamed him.
According to the Telegraph, his Red Devils team-mates even thought Mourinho was "bullying" Shaw.
But the pair reconciled and the defender was even given a bumper, new contract three months before the Portuguese was sacked last year.
Mourinho, however, was full of praise for Solskjaer's men for the way they reacted to their slow start at Old Trafford.
He said: "Even when you have possession and apparent control of the game, if you lose balance at any moment in transition that can happen.
"[Chelsea] hit the post twice, and you could they that they were unlucky.
"But you could always feel that United, even in the period they looked completely out of control, showed that they can be dangerous."
