Jason McAteer sent off after kicking Michael Owen during Star Sixes clash

The duo played 45 matches together during their time at Anfield.

But all friendships were set aside when the two met with a place in the final at stake in Glasgow.

The game got off to a frantic start, with challenges going in from both sides.

But it only took a few minutes for Owen and McAteer to start pulling at each other’s shirts.

McAteer dragged Owen to the ground, who lashed out with his leg.

The players squared up and it ended with McAteer sensationally kicked out at Owen.

There were serious consequences though, with Owen receiving a yellow card and McAteer shown his marching orders.

It got worse for Ireland too, who lost when Paul Konchesky scored with just 30 seconds remaining.

The win sent England through to the final against a Rest of the World side, with Ireland playing Scotland for third place.

Both players gave a piece of their mind at the final whistle too.

McAteer raged: “I’ll tell you why it’s a red card, because it’s Michael Owen and England and the officials are that bad.”

Owen retorted: “He pulled me, I kicked him, he kicked me back! Of course I deserved a red card.”

England went on to win the final 3-2, with Owen helping himself to a brace in front of a booing Scottish audience.
