Formula 1 qualifying results: Starting grid for 2021 Italian Grand Prix
The sprint before the sprint, with a twist.
It’s the second time that Formula 1 has taken a foray into the world of sprint qualifying, and it’s the first time that Valtteri Bottas took home a sprint qualifying flag. Kind of.
In the same week when Bottas was announced to replace Kimi Raikkonen at Alfa Romeo for the 2022 season, the Finn driver won the sprint qualifying, but due to an engine penalty, he’ll start Sunday’s Italian GP at the rear of the field. Meaning, Max Verstappen will start Sunday’s race from pole position.
Behind Verstappen will be McLaren drivers Daniel Ricciardo and Lando Norris, who held off Lewis Hamilton to enter Sunday’s race third.
Bottas aside, qualifying wasn’t without drama: Hamilton, who started in second, quickly fell behind at the start of the sprint, finishing fourth. Pierre Gasly, last year’s winner in Monza, crashed out entering the first chicane of the sprint.
Here’s how they’ll line up this Sunday in Italy:
