Ex-Arsenal star Matteo Guendouzi endures Champions League horror show as he 'kills Aubameyang's joy' | The Sun

FORMER Arsenal star Matteo Guendouzi endured a Champions League horror show as Marseille crashed out to Panathinaikos on penalties.

Marseille were trailing the tie 1-0 after losing away to the Athens side in last week's first leg of the Champions League qualifier.

But they looked set to overturn the deficit, after racing out of the blocks into a 2-0 first half lead at the Stade Velodrome.

Guendouzi's fellow ex-Arsenal and now Marseille team-mate Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang looked to be back to his best as he bagged both of Marseille's goals on the night.

He opened the scoring after just two minutes before adding a second to put Marseille ahead in the tie at the end of the second half.

Marseille then looked to sit in doggedly after the interval as they looked to defend their aggregate lead.

And they so nearly, did, until Guendouzi gave away a 99th minute penalty to allow the Greek side to draw level on aggregate.

The former Arsenal midfielder came on as a 68th minute sub as the Southern France side did everything they could to defend their lead.

But Panathinaikos' pressure eventually told, with Guendouzi handling a late corner in his own area.

The resulting penalty was converted by Fotis Ioannidis which forced extra-time.

And after extra time remained goalless, the tie was decided on penalties.

Guendouzi's night took a turn to become even worse as he stepped up to take Marseille's first penalty.

His shot was well-saved by goalkeeper Alberto Brignoli and it proved to be the crucial penalty in the end.

The remaining players from both sides all converted their spot-kicks ensuring that Marseille crashed out 5-3 on pens in front of their home fans.

Arsenal fans keeping an eye on their former players now at Marseille did not hold back in their criticism of the 24-year-old midfielder. One fan on Twitter said: "Matteo Guendouzi killed Aubameyang's joy tonight Caused a penalty and missed a penalty that knocked Marseille out.

"Mikel Arteta saw the future before selling him, that's another masterclass from the Coach 👏."
