Emerging Domingo German flirts with a Yankees no-hitter

BALTIMORE — Domingo German made the Yankees rotation in part because of injuries to Luis Severino and CC Sabathia.

The right-hander has done his part to stick around. After he allowed just one hit and an unearned run in his season debut against Detroit last week, German retired the first 13 Orioles he faced on Sunday at Camden Yards and didn’t allow a hit until Hanser Alberto singled to right-center with one out in the bottom of the sixth.

Baltimore didn’t get its first baserunner until German walked Rio Ruiz with one out in the fifth, as the Orioles couldn’t get to the 26-year-old.

Dwight Smith Jr. lined out to second with one out in the bottom of the fourth, when DJ LeMahieu made a nice play, but for the most part, the Yankees weren’t tested as German pitched well. They built a 4-0 lead thanks to solo homers in the second by Gleyber Torres and Clint Frazier and a two-run shot by Gary Sanchez in the third.

Ruiz sent a fly ball toward the right-field corner, but it landed foul, just eluding a diving Aaron Judge. Ruiz walked later in the at-bat.
