De Gea said sorry to team-mates in Man Utd dressing room for howler as he blames himself for Barcelona defeat
DAVID DE GEA apologised to Manchester United team-mates after his Nou Camp howler sealed their Champions League doom.
The Spanish keeper, 28, was inconsolable after allowing Lionel Messi’s second goal to squirm under his body as Barcelona marched to an easy 4-0 aggregate win.
He could do nothing about the Argentine's first, however, as Barca's No10 arrowed a left-footed curler into the bottom corner.
Similarly ex-Liverpool man Philippe Coutinho hit a sublime effort from outside the box that nestled into the top corner well out of De Gea's reach.
However, United's Spanish stopper could not forgive himself for the gift he gave Messi & Co that seemingly ended all hope they could progress through to the semi-final.
De Gea said sorry at full-time in the dressing room and even claimed his team could have won the tie had it not been for his error.
He cut a sad figure as he trudged off at full-time. And while nobody was blaming him amongst the team, De Gea was obviously blaming himself.
He is still to commit his future to United, with a new five-year deal on the table waiting to be signed.
The prospect of no Champions League football next season may make his mind up over a potential move.
Real Madrid are still keen on the former Atletico man, who is now in his eighth season at Old Trafford.
