Correa in intensive care in Britain after crash that killed Hubert

Formula 2 driver Juan Manuel Correa is moved to intensive care in Britain with two broken legs and a spinal injury suffered in the crash that killed Anthoine Hubert

Juan Manuel Correa, the Formula 2 driver injured in the crash that killed Anthoine Hubert in Belgium last week, has been moved to intensive care in Britain.

Correa injured his back and broke both of his legs in the accident in Belgium last Saturday and had a four hour operation in Liege.

‘He will continue his recovery in the care of a specialist team,’ a statement from his Sauber Junior team said.

The 22-year-old Hubert died due to the 170mph impact with Correa’s car at the Spa-Francorchamps circuit.

The FIA said in a statement that Hubert died at 18:35 local time after being taken to the medical centre.

Formula 1 drivers held a minute’s silence before their Grand Prix on Sunday to pay respects to Hubert. 

Lewis Hamilton witnessed the crash while speaking to media and posted en emotional message on Instagram after news of Hubert’s death had emerged.

‘This is devastating. God rest your soul Anthoine. My prayers and thoughts are with you and your family today,’ he wrote.

‘If a single one of you watching and enjoying this sport think for a second what we do is safe you’re hugely mistaken. All these drivers put their life on the line when they hit the track and people need to appreciate that in a serious way because it is not appreciated enough.

‘Not from the fans nor some of the people actually working in the sport. Anthoine is a hero as far as I’m concerned, for taking the risk he did to chase his dreams. I’m so sad that this has happened. Let’s lift him up and remember him. Rest in peace brother.’
