College baseball player dies after collapsing on field

A college baseball player in South Carolina died after collapsing on the field during practice, according to officials.

Parker Neff, who played shortstop for University of South Carolina Salkehatchie, was out on the field Friday preparing for practice when he collapsed, the Greenville News reported.

The 21-year-old was brought to Allendale County Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:04 p.m., news station WSPA reported.

His cause of death wasn’t released pending an autopsy.

Neff’s death was confirmed Friday night by the baseball team at North Greenville University, where he redshirted his freshman season, according to the Greenville News.

His former teammates tweeted their condolences, writing, “Parker was an awesome kid, always smiling, and was loved by all of his teammates.”
