Australian Open 2017: Heather Watson and Kyle Edmund join Brits in second round in Melbourne

HEATHER Watson dug deep to see off home favourite Samantha Stosur 6-3 3-6 6-0 to become one of FIVE Brits through to the second round of the singles.
Ninth seed Jo Konta kick-started a terrific day with a clinical 7-5 6-2 win over Kirsten Flipkens of Belgium.
Kyle Edmund then dismantled Colombian rival Santiago Giraldo 6-2 7-5 6-3.
The triple Brit success came after Andy Murray and Dan Evans both did the business on the opening day of the tournament.
Watson took the opener 6-3 before losing the second by the same score – and even though she took the decider 6-0, every point against the 2011 US Open champ had to be clawed with her fingernails.
