Aussie paper hits back at Mail Sport's Stuart Broad

Australian newspaper hits back at Mail Sport columnist Stuart Broad and claim ‘the Poms have taken whingeing to new heights’ after England bowler insisted Pat Cummins will REGRET his actions at Lord’s

  • They had previously depicted England captain Ben Stokes as a ‘crybaby’

The Australian media has refused to relent in its war of words with the England cricket team, with one outlet mocking Stuart Broad as a clown in Wednesday’s paper.

Mail Sport columnist Broad said on Tuesday that Australia captain Pat Cummins will end up regretting the decision not to withdraw his side’s appeal against Jonny Bairstow’s dismissal despite the controversial nature of his wicket.

Bairstow ducked to avoid a bouncer off Cameron Green, before wandering out of the crease assuming the ball was dead as it appeared the umpires began walking to their mark for the start of a new over.

Carey swiftly picked up the ball and threw it underarm from behind the stumps to dismiss the England batter.

The on-field umpires insisted that the ball was still in play when Bairstow wandered towards the middle of the wicket, therefore by the laws of cricket he was deemed out.

The war of words between Australia and England continues after Jonny Bairstow’s controversial dismissal during the second Ashes Test at Lord’s

However, it has sparked a huge debate about the spirit of the game, with critics claiming the Aussies’ behaviour goes against their desire to clean up their act following sandpapergate in 2018.

Broad replaced Bairstow at the wicket and stump mic picked up the fast bowler telling Carey ‘you’ll forever be remembered for that,’ while the Australian team were roundly booed by the Lord’s crowd, and received a hostile reception in the Long Room.

In Tuesday’s Daily Mail, Broad detailed what he told the Aussie players while he was at the crease, and insisted Cummins will come to regret his decision not to withdraw his appeal.

‘What amazed me, and what I told the Australians I could not believe as we left the field at lunch, was that not one senior player among them — and I very much understand in the emotion of the game that the bowler and wicketkeeper would have thought ‘that’s out’ — questioned what they had done.

STUART BROAD: PAT CUMMINS WILL REGRET LORD’S CALL

‘Especially given what their team has been through over recent years, with all their cultural change. Not one of them said: ‘Hang on, lads. I’m not really sure about this.’ Not one of them thought: ‘He’s gaining no advantage. He’s not trying to get a run. It’s the end of the over. It’s a bit of a random dismissal. We should cancel that appeal.’

‘Ultimately, Pat Cummins is a really great guy and I would be amazed, once the emotion settles, if he does not sit back and think, ‘I got that one wrong’, even though his bottom line at the time was winning a Test match.’

However, the Australian media has twisted the knife on the 36-year-old, with Perth’s The West Australian depicting Broad as a clown on the front page of Wednesday’s paper.

‘Havin’ a laugh: The Poms take whingeing to new heights as we decode Broad tantrum’.

It’s not the first time Broad has been public enemy No 1 in Australia, with Brisbane’s The Courier Mail banning mention of his name in their pages during the 2013-14 Ashes series after he refused to walk despite edging an Ashton Agar delivery the previous summer.

On Tuesday, the West Australian depicted England captain Ben Stokes as a baby with the headline: ‘Crybabies’. Stokes was in a playful mood as he responded to the front page on Twitter.

‘That’s definitely not me, since when did I bowl with the new ball,’ he said.
