Arsenal battling against Lyon for Belgian sensation Alexis Saelemaekers

The defender, 19, has attracted interest from a host of clubs following his impressive spell of form in the Belgian First Division.

According to Foot01, Lyon and the Gunners have been monitoring him ahead of the January transfer window.

The Belgian penned a new deal in August, which will keep him under contract until June 2022.

But Unai Emery will be be looking to bolster his defence in the new year following a number of injury problems in the first half of the season.

The Gunners boss is also reportedly considering a swoop for Chelsea outcast Gary Cahill in the new year.

But Arsenal will have to act quickly if they want to beat Lyon in the scramble for his signature.

Saelemaekers has been a huge hit for Karim Belhocine's side this season and his performances have earned him a lot of attention.

He has secured his spot in the first-team at the age of 19 and he has been called up to play for Belgium's youth teams.

The youngster has made four appearances for the Under-19's and played three times for the Under-21's.

It appears he fits the bill for Arsenal, who are fifth in the Premier League table after 18 matches.

The Gunners also looking to strengthen their midfield in January and they have been linked to Watford midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure.
