Vile boyfriend who savagely battered pregnant partner jailed for just 20 months

A 'sadistic' boyfriend who attacked and threatened to cut open his pregnant girlfriend's baby 'with a spoon' was jailed for 20 months.

Alan Nolan, 23, of Kirkby, had recently walked free over the death of his the-girlfriend Georgia Cassidy, who died from swallowing his cocaine wraps when he had been pulled over by police.

Judge David Aubrey handed the 23-year-old a 20-month imprisonment, but he slammed prosecutors for charging the man with a less serious criminal offence.

Last November, Nolan viciously battered his eight-week pregnant girlfriend Bethany Wainwright after she refused to pick him up from Liverpool city centre with his friends after he had woken her at 1am.

Having drunk alcohol and smoked cannabis he called her for a lift but when he was told no he flew into a rage. Returning in the early hours he battered Ms Wainright through the communal areas of the flat.

He placed his foot on his girlfriend's pregnant stomach, threatening to 'spoon the baby out of her' despite her pleading with him that she had his baby inside of her.

The Liverpool Echo has previously revealed a catalogue of photos which showed how Nolan left his defenceless girlfriend black and blue.

Prosecutor Simon Leong said Ms Wainwright struggled to sleep and doctors had diagnosed her with depression.

She has three nightmares a night, and branded Nolan "a liar", who was "not being honest about what happened," "playing the victim and blaming her."

Today, Judge Aubrey told him: "I regret to say, I have come to the conclusion that you are callous and uncaring, only concerned about yourself.

"I am not satisfied you are grief-stricken and that any post-traumatic stress disorder that you may have suffered since these tragic events has been of little correlation to that which occurred on November 11."

And he added: "I reject the submissions that these events of November 11 were triggered by your grief."

Defending,Charles Lander, told Liverpool Crown Court that his client "hadn't moved on from the traumatic events of the death of Georgia", how he "blamed himself every day for her passing," and that "he knows that his grief is incomparable to that suffered by Georgia's family."

The lawyer claimed the 23-year-old had attempted suicide twice, had been admitted to the Coniston mental health unit in Prescot, and had lost a "significant amount of weight."

The court heard how Nolan had been handed an 18-month suspended sentence on October 23 for possession with intent to supply Class A drugs in relation to Miss Cassidy' tragedy.

He was slammed for only taking his partner of four years to Aintree hospital an hour later, after first calling two friends.

The cocaine which Miss Cassidy swallowed had been intended for Nolan and his friends.

Instead of rushing to get Georgia immediate medical attention, Nolan called two friends, Mark Guest and Anthony Whitworth, and they met at the The Punchbowl pub car park in Sefton Village.

When finally arriving at hospital with the 19-year-old, Georgia was not breathing, in cardiac arrest and never regained consciousness, meaning her family had to switch off her life support machine.

After Nolan was sent down, an angry Judge Aubrey asked prosecutor Simon Leong why the defendant had been charged with common assault, which only allowed him to pass a six month sentence.

An offence of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, he said, instead carried a maximum sentence of five years.

Judge Aubrey, who imposed an indefinite restraining order, asked: "Can you help me? I wish to have a full explanation.

"I will be bringing the matter to the attention of the Chief Crown Prosecutor."
