‘Tuxedo nails’ is set to be the new manicure trend – and it’s the opposite of Barbiecore

There’s no denying that the recent nail trends have been distinctly soft and feminine, from sugary Barbiecore pinks to neutral quiet luxury nudes.

Sometimes you can have too much of a good thing, and if you’re ready to switch things up from the soft and sweet nail trend, then we have just the thing for you.

Enter the tuxedo manicure, that ditches pastel shades in favour of a bold monochrome palette and graphic details that puts an edgy spin on the classic French manicure.

By now you’ll have seen plenty of variations of the Frenchie, from replacing the traditional white with pastel coloured tips, to colourful blueberry milk shades that mix bright colours with a creamy base.

But tuxedo nails take things one step further, and opt for a dramatic black and white colour scheme that’s the perfect antithesis of the bright pink Barbiecore trend that’s been gracing our nail inspo boards for months, and it couldn’t be easier to do at home.

Celebrity manicuristTom Bachikshowed his Instagram followers exactly how it’s done, as he shared a snap of his latest tuxedo manicure alongside a black and white snap of JLo in a monochrome swimsuit, calling her his “nail muse”.

There are actually two variations of the trend; one which sees a white base with dramatic black tips, and one – like Tom's – that keeps the classic French tips white but layers them on top of an inky black nail bed.

Whichever you choose is up to you, but the technique is largely the same for both; you just need a steady hand and some nail varnishes of your choosing.

The easier method is the black tipped style, as it’s, of course, easier to paint a darker colour over a lighter one.

To begin, take a solid white nail varnish, like shade Blanc from essie, £7.19 here, and apply it to your nails. Don’t forget, with white being such a light shade you may need to do a couple of thin layers to get full coverage.

Once your nails are dry, you need to choose a deep black shade to create your contrasting tip. We love the Rimmel 60 Secs Rita Shades Of Black Nail Polish, £3.99 here, as it’s quick drying and ultra glossy.

Then take a brush – you can use either the one that comes with the bottle, or your own fine liner brush for more precision – and create a sharp, clean French tip across the top of your nail by following your nail’s natural shape.

Finish off with a top coat, like the No7 Gel Finish Top coat, £7.95 here, which gives you a glossy shine and helps protect your hard work from chipping.

To replicate Tom’s JLo inspired version, with a black base and classic white tip, you’ll first want to apply a protective base coat, which stops dark nail varnish from staining your nail beds.

The Rimmel London Nail Nurse Base & Top Coat 5 in 1, £2 here, not only protects your nails but also helps strengthen them and creates a smooth, even base for your nail varnish, making it the go-to for your at home mani.

Next apply the darker shade to your nail bed. You can either coat your whole nail, or take it almost to the tip of your nail, then use a cotton bud or brush and nail varnish remover to remove it from the area that your white nail polish will be applied.

Leaving the white section empty makes it easier to apply the lighter polish without worrying about covering the black shade.

Once your dark layer is dried, paint the tips of your nails with the white nail polish, before applying a glossy top coat.

And voila – the perfect antidote to Barbie’s manicure take over.
