The 2021 Grammy Awards are right around the corner! In honor of music’s biggest night on March 14, Wonderwall.com is taking a look back at when some of our favorite artists attended the ceremony for the very first time, starting with this future pop superstar. Ariana Grande made her first Grammys appearance in 2011 back when she was still a pint-sized Nickelodeon actress. She wouldn’t receive a Grammy nomination for four more years: That’s when she picked up a nod for best pop duo/group performance for “Bang Bang” with Jessie J and Nicki Minaj. Two years after her big “American Idol” win, Kelly Clarkson was in attendance on music’s biggest night. At the 2004 Grammys, she was nominated for best female pop vocal performance for her song “Miss Independent.”

In 1999 — the first time she went to the Grammy Awards — Jennifer Lopez sparkled in a strapless gold micro-minidress. (She earned her first nomination the very next year.)
Drake’s first Grammys were in 2010. He brought his mom as his date!
Mariah Carey stunned in a rhinestone-edged LBD while posing with her awards for best new artist and best female pop vocal performance at her very first Grammy Awards in 1991.
Babies! Kesha and Justin Bieber, who presented together, both attended the Grammys for the first time in 2010. While the Biebs earned his first two nominations the following year, Kesha would have to wait another eight years to earn some recognition.
Selena Gomez has yet to be nominated for a Grammy, but she’s been in attendance at the major music event a few times. The first? Back in 2011, when she was supporting then-boyfriend Justin Bieber and his two nominations.
Back in 2005, a young singer named John Legend walked the Grammys red carpet for the first time. The following year, he returned with an astounding eight nominations.
Lady Gaga had an incredibly memorable fashion moment during the 2010 Grammy Awards, which was her first experience with music’s biggest night (though she earned her first nomination the year before). In 2010, she took home two Grammys and scored another three nominations.
Britney Spears attended the Grammy Awards for the first time in 2000, the year she earned her first two nominations: best new artist and best female pop vocal performance.
Keith Urban rocked a spiked and frosted ‘do with an equally LOL-worthy ensemble while giving a thumbs up during his first Grammy Awards in 2001. The first-time nominee scored a nod for his track “Rollercoaster” that year.
In 1986, a young Whitney Houston won a Grammy at her first ceremony. She picked up best pop vocal performance for “Saving All My Love For You.”
Gwen Stefani attended the Grammy Awards for the first time in 1997. Her band, No Doubt, earned their first two nominations that year: best new artist and best rock album for “Tragic Kingdom.”
Adele’s first Grammys? The superstar attended in 2009 and won two awards — best new artist and best female pop vocal performance for “Chasing Pavements.”
Christina Aguilera attended the Grammys for the first time in 2000 and left with the best new artist prize.
Kanye West hit the Grammys red carpet for the first time in 2005. That night, he collected three trophies including two for his own tunes (best rap song for “Jesus Walks” and best rap album for “The College Dropout) and one for co-writing Alicia Keys’ “You Don’t Know My Name” (which won for best R&B song).
During the 2008 Grammy Awards, the year she earned her second nomination, Miranda Lambert walked the red carpet with then-boyfriend Blake Shelton — and it was his first time experiencing music’s biggest night. (It’s unclear whether or not she attended the ceremony in 2007 as a first-time nominee.)
Celine Dion looked SO different when she attended the Grammy Awards for the first time in 1992, the year before she earned her first nomination — and ultimately won!
The first time Beyonce attended the Grammy Awards was in 2000 as one-fourth of Destiny’s Child along with Kelly Rowland, Farrah Franklin and Michelle Williams. The girl group earned their first nomination that year for their hit “Bills, Bills, Bills.”
JAY-Z wasn’t on hand when he won his first Grammy (best rap album for “Vol. 2…Hard Knock Life”) in 1999: He boycotted the ceremony that year to protest the fact that DMX failed to earn a single nomination for his lauded debut studio album, “It’s Dark and Hell Is Hot.” Hova finally made his Grammy debut in 2004, the year he picked up two Grammys for “Crazy In Love,” his hit collaboration with his missus, Beyonce.
The men of U2 — The Edge, Adam Clayton, Larry Mullen Jr. and Bono — attended the Grammys for the first time in 1988. The first-time nominees took home two awards that year including album of the year for “The Joshua Tree.”
Despite being in the music industry for nearly a decade prior, pop star-turned-actress Mandy Moore didn’t attend her first Grammys until 2007.
First-time nominee Katy Perry looked pretty in pink during the 2009 Grammy Awards, her first experience with music’s biggest night. She earned a nomination for her hit “I Kissed a Girl” that year.
Pink attended her very first Grammy Awards in 2002. That night, she also took home her first ever Grammy for best pop collaboration with vocals for “Lady Marmalade” with Lil’ Kim, Mya and Christina Aguilera.
In 2007, Rihanna arrived at her first Grammy Awards in a gorgeous green gown. The following year, she scored four nominations — and took home a Grammy for her hit “Umbrella.”
1995 saw Sheryl Crow take home best new artist, best female pop vocal performance and record of the year trophies for “All I Wanna Do” when she attended her first ever Grammy Awards.
First-time nominee Carrie Underwood won both of the awards she was up for (best new artist and best female country vocal performance) during the 2007 Grammy Awards, which was her first experience with music’s biggest night.
A baby-faced Miley Cyrus attended the Grammys for the first time in 2008. (She earned her first and only nomination in 2015.)
Ed Sheeran was nominated for his first Grammy in 2013 and arrived at the ceremony in style. Though his hit “The A Team” didn’t win song of the year that night, three years later, Ed picked up the same award (as well as best pop solo performance) for his track “Thinking Out Loud.”
Fergie attended the Grammys for the first time in 2004 — the year she earned her first two nominations (best rap/sung collaboration and record of the year for “Where Is the Love?”) as part of the Black Eyed Peas.
Lance Bass, Joey Fatone, JC Chasez, Chris Kirkpatrick and Justin Timberlake of *NSYNC attended the Grammys for the first time in 2000, the year they scored their first two nominations.
In 1998, two years after they tied the knot, Faith Hill accompanied husband Tim McGraw to his first Grammy Awards. The duo were up for an award for their collaboration “It’s Your Love” that year. (Tim actually earned his first nomination the previous year, but it doesn’t appear that he attended the ceremony.) As for Faith, she actually made her Grammy debut a few years before her hubby…
Faith Hill was a vision in white during the 1995 Grammy Awards. (It would take another two years before she earned her first nomination.)
Ricky Martin’s first Grammys ceremony was back in 1999 — and he won! He took home a trophy for best Latin pop performance for “Vuelve.” A year later, he returned with four nominations after releasing his self-titled English crossover album.
Arriving in quite the questionable fashion choice, Alicia Keys walked her first Grammys red carpet in 2002. That night, she nearly made history, becoming the woman with the second most Grammy wins in a single night — five — including best new artist and best R&B album for “Songs in A Minor.”
It was all leopard print for Nicki Minaj in 2011. That year was the first time she attended the Grammy Awards, and it also marked her first nomination. She was up for best rap performance by a duo or group for “My Chick Bad” with Ludacris.
Though Elton John earned his first Grammy nomination in 1971, he didn’t attend the award ceremony until 2000, the year he was honored as the MusiCares Person of the Year.
Bruno Mars’ first Grammys? 2011, when he picked up a trophy for best male pop vocal performance for “Just The Way You Are.”
Paul McCartney’s late wife, Linda McCartney, accompanied him to the 1971 Grammy Awards where he picked up a prize on behalf of The Beatles. It was the first time Macca was photographed at the ceremony, though his band won their first Grammy in 1965.
Shakira picked up a trophy at her first Grammys ceremony in 2001. She won for best latin pop album for “Shakira MTV Unplugged.”
Cher and Stevie Wonder, who took home four awards that year, goofed around while hanging out backstage during the 1974 Grammy Awards. (Though both artists had earned nominations in previous years, it’s unclear whether or not either had attended the ceremony before 1974.)
A super-buff and brunette Madonna cleaned up during the 1999 Grammy Awards. Though she’d earned several nominations in previous years (and won her first Grammy in 1992), it was the first time she was photographed at the ceremony. (It’s unclear whether or not she attended prior to 1999.)
