Professional makeup artist reveals why you are using setting powder all WRONG – and explains the correct way to apply it

A makeup artist with 16 years of experience has revealed that people are putting on setting powder completely wrong — and explained how to fix it in a few simple steps. 

Selena Marchand is a professional makeup artist from Nova Scotia, Canada, who often shares her expertise, tips and tricks on her TikTok page, where she boasts over 485,000 followers.

In a new video series created this week called ‘It’s probably not your makeup products… it’s you,’ she explained why many people are not using their setting powder properly.

‘Today, we’re gonna talk about setting powder,’ Marchand began. ‘Now, here’s the first thing you’re probably doing wrong.’

Marchand primarily specializes in bridal and beauty makeup, and has been working in the industry for 16 years

‘Look in your makeup bag, and if you have one of these huge makeup brushes, you’re probably not setting your face right,’ she explained, as she held up a large, fluffy makeup brush.

Marchand then brought out a much smaller brush to compare sizes, explaining that she uses the smaller makeup brush, which is the correct one to use, to set her clients faces with setting powder.

The brush she used was the 109 size by MAC Cosmetics. 

‘Now, when you’re using a powder, I want you to get rid of any of the compact powder that have color,’ she instructed.

‘The pressed powders, get rid of those, you do not need them.’

However, what you will need instead is a translucent powder.

Marchand’s translucent powder of choice, which she used in the video, is the Pound Cake powder by the brand Huda Beauty. 

‘Now, because the setting powder is translucent, you don’t have to worry about it getting cakey on your face,’ the makeup artist explained.

Marchand also explained that you want to be using a translucent setting powder, instead of one that has color in it

The makeup artist revealed exactly what kind of brush she uses to apply the powder on her clients

The makeup artist explained that she dips her brush in the powder ‘just a little bit’ and then begins to tap it into the skin, instead of ‘fluffing’ it all over the face.

‘We’re gonna start tapping it into the face, pushing it into the face, because remember, we want to set our makeup,’ the professional makeup artist instructed.

Marchand divulged that you don’t need to set your blush and bronzer with setting powder, because they are powder products.

But other spots on the face, like the t-zone, are definitely areas you need to set. 

‘I personally like to focus on the t-zone, up and around the nose, the forehead, and in around the chin,’ Marchand said, as she demonstrated such on camera.

‘So that’s how you use powder.’ 

In the comments section, many people joked that they were, in fact, the problem, like the title of her new series.

Someone else suggested, ‘NYX also makes a nice, price friendly translucent loose powder.’

This isn’t the first time that Marchand has revealed some shocking makeup secrets.

In another TikTok video, the professional makeup artist shared the three makeup products that she would never, ever spend money on.

One of these products included primers, which are applied to the face before makeup.

‘A lot of time primers can actually make your makeup look worse, which is not what we want,’ she said in the video.

‘I just wouldn’t put it under my foundation if I was you.’
